To Be Found

August Rush A few weeks ago, I went to see the new movie August Rush. No spoiler here. I’m not telling you how it ends or even the full story line. I will give you this much though. The movie is about a boy who is given up for adoption at birth. As he grows, he comes to know within his soul that the world is speaking to him and every sound he hears is music.

In the course of time, he meets up with a man who sees his gift and in a conversation asks this question. “What do you want – in the entire world, what do you want?” The boy looks at him without hesitation and says, “To be found.” Go see August Rush!

Paul, wrote, “I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him…” Philippians 3:8-9 Paul was willing to give everything in order that he might be found in Christ. The need we have with us is the need for God and His love. God expressed His love in Jesus Christ our Master.

The idea that there is within us a “God shaped hole” that we seek to fill with all manner of things, is not a new idea. While its origin may remain in question, certainly, there is biblical support for the idea; the validity of the notion is without debate. We are all longing for something to fulfill and complete us. T.D. Jakes said, “You will be known by what you run to for comfort.” Very true!

At the core of this desire within us is the need to be loved. God certainly fills that void. However, it’s not enough that we intellectually accept that we are loved. This is true whether we are talking about the love of God, the love of a parent or even our mate. Simply hearing it or hearing about it wont do . . . we need to feel it! It seems that some folks feel God’s love as easy as breathing, but for others of us, we have to fight to find it.

In writing, there is there is a mantra that goes, Show the reader, don’t tell them. I think this is true about love as well. No, I’m not saying we don’t need to say we love each other. The old saying that goes, “Actions speak louder than words” is an old saying for good reason. Someone near you today needs to be found. They need to be found in the comfort of your touch or the bliss of your silence, perhaps in your arms or in the warmth of your smile. Someone you know needs to be found.
